The One Thing Every Career-Changer Wishes They’d Known Earlier

We asked recent graduates what they wish they’d known before starting their program. The answer was nearly universal.

Not “I wish I’d known this specific fact.” Not “I wish the program covered this topic.” The answer was about emotion and mindset.

The One Thing

Every single person said some version of the same thing: “I wish I’d known how much of the struggle was normal, not personal.”

They thought confusion meant they didn’t belong. They thought struggling meant they’d made a mistake. They thought everyone else understood everything and they were the only one lost.

Then they discovered everyone felt exactly this way. Everyone struggled. Everyone had moments of “what was I thinking?” Everyone questioned their decision.

And knowing that normal, they could keep going.

The Permission You Need

Career-changers are often people who’ve succeeded in their previous careers. You know how to do your job. You know how to be competent. Being a beginner is uncomfortable.

But here’s the permission you need: it’s okay to be confused. It’s okay to not know things. It’s okay to struggle. That’s literally what learning is.

The Reframe

Every moment of struggle isn’t evidence you should quit. It’s evidence you’re learning something new. That’s the only thing it means.

The Bottom Line

The one thing that matters is knowing the struggle is normal. Everything else is just logistics.
