The Construction Estimating and Project Scheduling Certificate program emphasizes construction practices, project estimating, cost control and scheduling. Students will gain knowledge of drawing interpretation, construction methods, quantity and cost estimating as well as computerized scheduling techniques through lectures and field studies. Instruction covers current building code standards, estimating takeoff, critical path scheduling methods and the latest computer drafting technologies, ensuring graduates have the skills and competencies to enter the workforce immediately.

Graduates from this program are well prepared for employment opportunities with local construction firms, contractors, sub-contractors, suppliers and engineering firms. They may also pursue further studies in fields such as civil engineering, building science, architecture, and computer-aided design.

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, students will be awarded Brighton College Construction Estimating and Project Scheduling Certificate

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this program, student will be able to:

  • Produce accurate 2D drawings and basic 3D models using AutoCAD in accordance with industry standards.
  • Apply BC Building Code requirements to architectural and building design drawings.
  • Incorporate applicable municipal bylaws into site and building design solutions.
  • Interpret architectural and engineering drawings to perform detailed quantity take-offs.
  • Prepare cost estimates for residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects using standard estimating methods.
  • Implement cost control and monitoring strategies to track and manage project costs and resources.
  • Analyze project information to develop logical task sequences for construction scheduling.
  • Use Microsoft Project to create and manage Gantt chart schedules.
  • Develop project resource sheets that include cost and allocation details.
  • Present construction estimates, schedules, and project documentation clearly to stakeholders.
AUT010 | Computer and Mathematic Fundamentals

This course provides students with the fundamentals of computer operation, file management, and basic mathematics. Major topics include keyboarding skills, Microsoft Word document formatting, Excel spreadsheet creation, linear algebra, quadratic equations, trigonometry, and geometry.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: none.

AUT100 | AutoCAD Fundamentals

This course provides student with the fundamental skills of computer aided design and drafting using AutoCAD. Students learn the most up-to-date AutoCAD techniques that are being used in engineering and building-design professions. Utilizing high-end computer tools, students learn how to create drawings in 2-dimensional environments and basic 3-dimensional models.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

CCT100 | Building Code

This course provides students with the knowledge to use the British Columbia Building Code as well as city zoning bylaws. Major topics include building zoning, residential wood framed building construction standards, design specifications, fire protection, basic structural standards, span table applications and other professional practices which may affect the design and construction of a building. Students will also use AutoCAD to create site plan, floor plans, sections and elevations.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.

CCT110 | Health and Safety in Construction

This course presents the role of key stakeholders involved in health and safety issues in construction. Sessions will include: the role of workers’ compensation board; accident prevention on the construction site; protection of the public; health hazards and the cost of accidents in construction.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.

CCT140 | Constructions Estimating 1

This course provides students with the knowledge necessary to estimate and control construction material quantities and cost for building structures and basic civil engineering infrastructures. Topics include residential, commercial and civil infrastructure estimating methods, quantity takeoff techniques, and cost calculation procedures of construction components. An overview of the contract terms and relationships between the contractual parties will also be discussed in this course.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100, CCT100.

CCT240 | Estimating and Cost Control

This course provides students with the knowledge to estimate and control construction activities for major wood, steel, and reinforced concrete building structures. Topics include residential, commercial, and industrial building quantity estimating methods, computerized takeoff techniques, and the calculation of construction costs. An overview of contractual obligations, contract specifications, and tender document interpretation will also be covered.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100, CCT100.

CMP100 | Construction Project Control and Scheduling

This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to plan a construction project, recognize cost controls, schedule the use of project resources, and understand the organization of the construction processes. Students will also learn to maintain construction change orders, record project data, and perform cost control functions. Various project task scheduling methods will be used throughout the course, and students will be taught to use Microsoft Project software to develop and manage a construction project.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.

Admission Requirements

  • High school diploma or mature student status*
  • Legal eligibility to study in Canada
  • English proficiency requirement from one of following options:
    1. Completion of 3 years of full-time secondary education (Grades 8-12), or 2 years of if Grade are 10, 11, or 12, have been successfully completed in the program’s language of instruction in a country where the language of instruction is one of the principal languages, or
    2. Completion of 2 years of full-time post-secondary education in the program’s language of instruction in a country where the language of instruction is one of the principal languages (includes international education credentials recognized through WES, ICES, and IQAS), or
    3. Evidence of achievement in a recognized standardized language assessment at an overall level equivalent to IELTS 5.5 (academic) or higher: IELTS academic 5.5; TOEFL IBT 46; CAEL 40; CELPIP (Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, Writing 5); DET 95, PTE 43; FCE 160 or “C”; Cambridge Linguaskill B2; LANGUAGECERT Academic B2; MET B2; iTEP Academic 3.5; EIKEN Grade Pre-1. Test results must be dated no more than two years before the start date of the program, or
    4. Evidence of graduation from language program with a minimum grade/level from a Languages Canada accredited institution with an established pathway/articulation agreement allowing direct entry (no further testing required) to a diploma or degree program at a public institution in Canada. The pathway/articulation agreement must be current at the date of enrolment, or
    5. Accuplacer - This option may only apply when:
      • English is the program’s language of instruction, and
      • the applicant is a mature domestic student facing barriers, and
      • the applicant cannot access their educational records or cannot provide sufficient evidence of secondary or post-secondary education as outlined in this policy
      • Applicant is 19 years or older at the start of the program and is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and
      • Applicant provides attestation that they have completed at least three years of full-time instruction in English* in a country where the English is one of the principal languages, and
      • Applicant completes an Accuplacer English Assessment (Next Generation: Reading, Writing and WritePlacer) and achieves the following minimum scores:
        • Reading: 230, and Writing: 230, and WritePlacer: 4
