The Construction Operations and Supervision Certificate prepares students for supervisory and operational roles in BC’s growing construction industry. The program addresses the full scope of construction site management — covering project planning, site operations, workforce supervision, health and safety regulations, construction law, estimating, and project documentation.
Students develop practical knowledge of construction workflows, site coordination, scheduling, subcontractor management, and the communication skills required to lead teams effectively across diverse construction environments. The curriculum reflects current industry standards and BC building regulations, aligning graduates with employer expectations across residential, commercial, and industrial construction.
The optional practicum connects students directly with the industry, providing real job-site experience and professional mentorship. Graduates pursue supervisory, coordination, and operations management roles with general contracting firms, construction management companies, and development organizations throughout BC.

This course provides students with the fundamentals of computer operation, file management, and basic mathematics. Major topics include keyboarding skills, Microsoft Word document formatting, Excel spreadsheet creation, linear algebra, quadratic equations, trigonometry, and geometry.

This course provides students with the fundamental skills of computer-aided design and drafting using AutoCAD. Students learn current AutoCAD techniques used in engineering and building-design professions, including 2D drawings and basic 3D models.

Students learn advanced AutoCAD commands and drawing-management techniques, with emphasis on scaled 2D project drawings in model and paper-space layouts and advanced 3D tools for surface and composite-solid models.

Students learn to use the British Columbia Building Code and city zoning bylaws. Topics include zoning, residential wood-frame construction standards, specifications, fire protection, structural standards, and professional practices affecting building design and construction.

This course develops verbal, written, and presentation skills for architecture, engineering, service, business, and technical environments. Students learn to produce technical reports and present project drawings effectively.

Students learn to estimate and control construction activities for major wood, steel, and reinforced-concrete structures. Topics include computerized takeoffs, construction costs, contractual obligations, specifications, and tender documents.

This course covers construction-management and site-management procedures, including project teams, construction documents, submittals, records, job-site control, negotiations, labour relations, safety, subcontracting, quality, time and cost control, scheduling, changes, claims, payments, and project closeout.

Students learn fundamental surveying concepts and techniques used in construction, including terminology, instrumentation, horizontal positions, elevations, and layout techniques. Training includes differential levels, electronic total stations, and basic GIS concepts.

This course introduces structural engineering and building-construction techniques. Topics include structural loads, standards, components, statics, materials, construction methods, and wood, steel, and concrete structural systems.
