Program Description

The Construction Operations and Supervision Certificate prepares students for supervisory and operational roles in BC’s growing construction industry. The program addresses the full scope of construction site management — covering project planning, site operations, workforce supervision, health and safety regulations, construction law, estimating, and project documentation.

Students develop practical knowledge of construction workflows, site coordination, scheduling, subcontractor management, and the communication skills required to lead teams effectively across diverse construction environments. The curriculum reflects current industry standards and BC building regulations, aligning graduates with employer expectations across residential, commercial, and industrial construction.

The optional practicum connects students directly with the industry, providing real job-site experience and professional mentorship. Graduates pursue supervisory, coordination, and operations management roles with general contracting firms, construction management companies, and development organizations throughout BC.

Upon successful completion of the Construction Operations and Supervision program, students will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

AUT010 | Computer and Mathematic Fundamentals

This course provides students with the fundamentals of computer operation, file management, and basic mathematics. Major topics include keyboarding skills, Microsoft Word document formatting, Excel spreadsheet creation, linear algebra, quadratic equations, trigonometry, and geometry.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: none.

AUT100 | AutoCAD Fundamentals

This course provides students with the fundamental skills of computer-aided design and drafting using AutoCAD. Students learn current AutoCAD techniques used in engineering and building-design professions, including 2D drawings and basic 3D models.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

AUT150 | AutoCAD Advanced

Students learn advanced AutoCAD commands and drawing-management techniques, with emphasis on scaled 2D project drawings in model and paper-space layouts and advanced 3D tools for surface and composite-solid models.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.

CCT100 | Building Code

Students learn to use the British Columbia Building Code and city zoning bylaws. Topics include zoning, residential wood-frame construction standards, specifications, fire protection, structural standards, and professional practices affecting building design and construction.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.

AUT140 | Technical Communications

This course develops verbal, written, and presentation skills for architecture, engineering, service, business, and technical environments. Students learn to produce technical reports and present project drawings effectively.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: none.

CCT110 | Health and Safety in Construction

This course explains the roles of key stakeholders in construction health and safety, including workers’ compensation, accident prevention, public protection, health hazards, and the cost of construction accidents.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: none.

CCT140 | Construction Estimating 1

Students learn to estimate and control construction material quantities and costs for building structures and basic civil infrastructure. Topics include estimating methods, quantity takeoffs, cost calculations, contract terms, and relationships between contractual parties.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100, CCT100.

CCT240 | Estimating and Cost Control

Students learn to estimate and control construction activities for major wood, steel, and reinforced-concrete structures. Topics include computerized takeoffs, construction costs, contractual obligations, specifications, and tender documents.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100, CCT100.

COS100 | Construction Management and Site Processes

This course covers construction-management and site-management procedures, including project teams, construction documents, submittals, records, job-site control, negotiations, labour relations, safety, subcontracting, quality, time and cost control, scheduling, changes, claims, payments, and project closeout.

Duration: 40 hours, 4 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.

COS200 | Construction Surveying

Students learn fundamental surveying concepts and techniques used in construction, including terminology, instrumentation, horizontal positions, elevations, and layout techniques. Training includes differential levels, electronic total stations, and basic GIS concepts.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.

COS300 | Design Principles and Construction Methods

This course introduces structural engineering and building-construction techniques. Topics include structural loads, standards, components, statics, materials, construction methods, and wood, steel, and concrete structural systems.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100, AUT150.

CMT100 | Construction Project Control and Scheduling

Students learn to plan construction projects, control costs, schedule resources, document changes, and maintain project data. Microsoft Project is used to develop and manage construction schedules.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.

CMT300 | Construction Law and Contracts

This course provides an overview of Canadian contract and construction law, including contract terms, specifications, legal principles, and their application to practical construction issues through real-life cases.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

BAF440B | Project Teamwork & Leadership

Students develop teamwork and leadership skills through a group project, practising communication, goal definition, schedule coordination, peer feedback, and conflict management. Additional topics include learning styles, diversity, and ethical behaviour.

AUT650 | Portfolio Development

Students prepare a professional portfolio of computer-aided design, engineering, architectural 2D drawings, and 3D models. The course also covers interviews, résumés, and cover letters.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: AUT100, AUT150, CCT100.

WEP150 | Practicum

Students apply program theory and skills in practical situations at a real business, obtain relevant field experience, and identify strengths and areas for growth before graduation.

Duration: 150 hours, 4 weeks.

Admission Requirements

  • High school diploma or mature student status*
  • Legal eligibility to study in Canada
  • English proficiency requirement from one of following options:
    1. Completion of 3 years of full-time secondary education (Grades 8-12), or 2 years of if Grade are 10, 11, or 12, have been successfully completed in the program’s language of instruction in a country where the language of instruction is one of the principal languages, or
    2. Completion of 2 years of full-time post-secondary education in the program’s language of instruction in a country where the language of instruction is one of the principal languages (includes international education credentials recognized through WES, ICES, and IQAS), or
    3. Evidence of achievement in a recognized standardized language assessment at an overall level equivalent to IELTS 5.5 (academic) or higher: IELTS academic 5.5; TOEFL IBT 46; CAEL 40; CELPIP (Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, Writing 5); DET 95, PTE 43; FCE 160 or “C”; Cambridge Linguaskill B2; LANGUAGECERT Academic B2; MET B2; iTEP Academic 3.5; EIKEN Grade Pre-1. Test results must be dated no more than two years before the start date of the program, or
    4. Evidence of graduation from language program with a minimum grade/level from a Languages Canada accredited institution with an established pathway/articulation agreement allowing direct entry (no further testing required) to a diploma or degree program at a public institution in Canada. The pathway/articulation agreement must be current at the date of enrolment, or
    5. Accuplacer - This option may only apply when:
      • English is the program’s language of instruction, and
      • the applicant is a mature domestic student facing barriers, and
      • the applicant cannot access their educational records or cannot provide sufficient evidence of secondary or post-secondary education as outlined in this policy
      • Applicant is 19 years or older at the start of the program and is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and
      • Applicant provides attestation that they have completed at least three years of full-time instruction in English* in a country where the English is one of the principal languages, and
      • Applicant completes an Accuplacer English Assessment (Next Generation: Reading, Writing and WritePlacer) and achieves the following minimum scores:
        • Reading: 230, and Writing: 230, and WritePlacer: 4
