The Computerized Accounting and Bookkeeping Diploma program equips students with the essential knowledge and skills to perform basic accounting & bookkeeping, computerized accounting & bookkeeping, use CaseWare in the preparation of Notice to Reader financial statements for tax purposes, and prepare business T1 tax returns. Students will also gain skills in business communications, word processing and spreadsheets.

4-week Practicum
Brighton College’s diploma in accounting program provides students with accounting training for all phases of the accounting cycle. Students will also learn bookkeeping skills such as Sage 50, QuickBooks, and bookkeeping in the workplace. With these skills, students will be qualified for junior positions in most organizations.
Upon completion of this program the successful student will have the ability to:
Students will practice business writing skills, applying the mechanics of style, developing proofreading and editing skills and using words effectively. They will apply verbal and non-verbal styles to a variety of business communications. The students will also practice career and interpersonal skills necessary for success in the workplace, such as conflict resolution and business etiquette. They will work in teams to examine administrative, ergonomic and efficiency functions of a business office. Students will also learn about using PowerPoint to deliver demonstrations, training, and presentations in a professional manner.

This course explores the fundamental use of Microsoft Office’s word processing software: Microsoft Word. Students will learn how to use Word to create, save, edit, format, and manipulate documents in a professional manner.

This course explores the fundamental use of Microsoft Office’s spreadsheet creation software: Microsoft Excel. Students will learn how to use Excel to create spreadsheets, perform calculations, generate charts from data tables, and print results.
Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.

This course introduces the students to the construction and interpretation of financial systems, records, reports, and statements, including how vital accurate and complete financial data is for a business to ensure its ongoing success. This course is the first in a series of courses to build a solid base in accounting from both a practical and a theoretical perspective.
Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.

This course introduces the students to the application of the accounting knowledge gained from BAF140 in simulated work situations, through a series of case studies done in group work. This course will also focus on several practical reconciliations that occur in the workplace like the bank reconciliation, petty cash, and other reports.
Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: BAF140.
Students will learn to use public accounting software such as CaseWare, an industry standard for small to medium public accounting practices for preparing financial statements. In this course, student will learn about the three major types of client engagements performed by public practice accountants when it comes to preparing financial statements for tax purposes.
Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: BAF140.
This course introduces the students to income tax. Students will prepare basic individual tax returns and will learn how to complete some of the more detail schedules. They will be introduced to preparation of Income Statements for tax purposes for proprietorships and partnerships. They will learn how to report this income on their personal tax return.
Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: BAF140.
This course introduces the students to the preparation of individual tax returns using computer software. Students will prepare individual tax returns using computer programs and learn how to complete some of the more detail schedules. They will learn to import statements from computerized accounting programs into the tax program.
Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: ACC510.
Sage 50 (formerly Simply Accounting) is one of the industry’s most well-recognized accounting programs. In this course students will learn how to use various Sage 50 modules and their features to prepare a set of financial records. The program is designed to give the student maximum hands-on practice under instructor supervision.
Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: BAF140.
This course is designed to prepare students to perform accounting tasks in QuickBooks for small to mid-sized business. Students will learn how to use various modules and their features to prepare a set of financial records. The course is designed to give the student maximum hands-on practice under instructor supervision.
Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: BAF140.
In this course, students will be introduced to the concepts of process costing and job costing, with the emphasis on job costing. Job costing via direct cost allocation and indirect cost allocation will be discussed. The job/project costing features of accounting software will be covered as it relates to expenses, payroll, and overhead allocation. Then the student will be given assignments to use the job costing features in the accounting software to allocate costs over jobs (or projects).
Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: CAC100, CAC400.
This course helps students establish the skills they need to be effective in a modern office environment. Students will practice time management strategies, office communication methods, and techniques for maintaining an office’s professional image. They will also learn how to make travel arrangements for business, and how to prepare meeting minutes, conference notes, and official reports.
Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: COM200.
This course introduces students to information management, including records management and basic database use and analytics reporting. Students will be introduced to Information Security concepts and issues and learn a systematic approach to managing information in an organization throughout its life cycle, including creating, identifying, classifying, storing, securing, retrieving, tracking, and disposing or permanently preserving records. Students will also learn how to enter data into databases, use and automate databases, document databases, and conduct basic data analysis.
Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.

This course helps students prepare the required job search skills and knowledge they need to become employed. Students will learn the best-known job search techniques to find viable opportunities, strategies to differentiate themselves from the competition and how they will add value to prospective employers in today’s competitive global economy.
Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: none.
During their practicum, students will have the opportunity to apply the theory and skills they learned during their program to practical situations at a real business. The purpose of the practicum is for students to obtain relevant field experience prior to graduation and identify their strengths and areas of growth prior to embarking on a new, exciting career.
Duration: 150 hours, 4 weeks.
