Since the release of our Structural and Building Technology Diploma program, we have had a plethora of questions come in via phone, email and social media from students who want to know more about the program and the industry. Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions regarding our diploma program and the structural engineering industry.

What does a structural technician do?

A structural engineering technician prepares engineering designs, drawings and related technical information. They work in a team with architects and/or engineers to assess the safety of a structure.

What are the duties of a structural drafting technician?

Typical drafting technician duties include developing engineering drawings, plans and diagrams from an engineer’s sketches.

What are the duties of a structural drafting technologist?

Typical drafting technologist duties include the following:

  • Developing engineering drawings, plans and diagrams from an engineer’s sketches.
  • Producing drawing sets.
  • Writing technical reports.
  • Preparing contracts and other documents.
  • Coordinate with consultants, architects and engineers to assist in specification preparation.

What is the Structural and Building Technology Diploma program?

This diploma program focuses on the design and analysis of wood, steel, and reinforced concrete structures. Students will acquire skills in structural design, analysis, and detailing through lectures, hands-on activities, and site visits in the field.

What jobs can I get with this diploma?

Upon graduation, students will be ready to start their career in the engineering industry as a structural designer, structural drafter, steel and concrete detailer, project coordinator, civil engineering drafter, construction technician and other related positions.

Can I work as a structural engineering technologist with this diploma?

To become a qualified structural engineering technologist, students must register with ASTTBC upon graduation.

How much do drafting technologists and technicians make?

According to Work BC and the 2021 Job Bank Wage data, drafting technologists and technicians make an annual provincial median salary of $64,654. The provincial hourly rate is between $20.88/hour and $39.00/hour.
