Mastering Communication in the Workplace with ENGL 125

At Brighton College, we recognize the vital role communication plays across all professional fields. This understanding is at the core of our curriculum for ENGL 125 – Professional and Technical Communication, designed to equip students with the skills necessary to succeed in today’s dynamic job market. This course is not just an academic offering; it’s a transformative experience for students aspiring to excel in roles that require proficient technical and professional communication skills.

Running from April 29 to August 9, 2024, at our Metropointe Campus, ENGL 125 is meticulously crafted to cater to a diverse range of learners, including recent high school graduates and mature students returning to academia. The course’s accessibility is emphasized by its modest fee of $100, ensuring it is within reach for many, reflecting our commitment to fostering educational opportunities.

The curriculum of ENGL 125 is designed around the practical application of communication skills in professional settings. Students engage in a variety of activities that teach them to draft concise, effective communication pieces tailored to specific professional contexts. These include business proposals, technical reports, user manuals, and executive summaries, among other document types. The course also delves into oral communication skills through presentations, enhancing both verbal and non-verbal communication techniques.

Beyond the mechanics of writing and speaking, ENGL 125 also emphasizes the importance of understanding the audience. This component of the course helps students learn how to adjust their messages based on cultural, organizational, and technical considerations, ensuring that their communication is not only clear but also contextually appropriate.

Supporting our students in this journey are experienced instructors who bring real-world expertise and a passion for teaching to the classroom. Their guidance is instrumental in helping students not only learn the theory but also apply it in practical scenarios, preparing them for the complexities of professional environments.

By the end of this course, students will have developed a comprehensive portfolio of work that demonstrates their mastery of professional and technical communication. This portfolio serves as a tangible representation of their skills and learning, which they can showcase to potential employers.

At Brighton College, we are proud to offer ENGL 125 as a pathway to professional success. We are dedicated to providing our students with the tools they need to communicate effectively and confidently in any professional setting.
