How to Get Into Construction Management

Construction management is a strong career choice for many people. It is in a booming industry here in BC, and it is the position that post labourers aspire to. For those who are serious about pursuing a career in this area, here are some tips as to how to get into construction management:

Get Some Post Secondary Education in Construction:  If you are looking for a long-term career in construction management, you may want to consider starting with a quick certificate or diploma. Almost all employers within the construction industry require post-secondary education in construction when hiring a manager and other executive positions. While it may not be needed for a general labour or a construction worker position, it is essential for getting a promotion.

Make Connections: Networking and making connections within the industry is an important part of your success. Contact big names in the industry, build rapport and establish relationships with project managers and executives. Find a mentor and/or an apprenticeship and work your way from the bottom up. People in the construction industry respect those who pay their dues, and once you have their respect you are more likely to obtain the construction management position you have been dreaming of. Not sure where to start? LinkedIn can help! Check out our previous, 3-part series on Getting Started With LinkedIn.

Gain Work Experience:  Lack of experience in the field? Afraid you might not have enough construction experience for a management position? Consider doing a certificate as a construction technician from a college such as Brighton College, which offers a guaranteed practicum. This is a great first step in gaining industry related work experience, especially for those who have none.
