Increasing Opportunities for Civil Engineering Technicians in Vancouver

Share

We all know that commuting in Vancouver can be a bit of a nightmare, especially given the city’s recent ranking as the second most congested city in North America. Fortunately, the city is currently undergoing various infrastructure renewal projects to help decrease congestion, improve infrastructure and create new jobs.

So what is civil engineering?

The Civil Engineering job outlook is above average in almost every regard, according to WorkBC. A civil engineering technician level jobs include:

  • Civil engineering technician
  • Highway technician
  • Construction technician
  • Structural design technician

Someone in a civil engineering career can expect to earn between $20 and $40 dollars an hour. While most jobs in this industry circulate around busier urban centers, there are opportunities away from the city as well, considering B.C.’s province-wide aging infrastructure. Areas due to be expecting the most growth remain within urban and industrial epicenters, however.

You don’t need to attain an undergrad degree in engineering to work in the civil field. At Brighton College students can enroll in a Civil Design Technician Diploma program which is accredited by the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTT BC). After completing the program and getting real-world experience, you could become a technician in the civil engineering area. This program focuses on learning aspects of civil design that are up-to-date and relevant to the industry within B.C.
