Greater Vancouver’s construction industry is booming.
The province has seen significant growth in the construction industry in terms of employment, expanding from about 200,000 jobs in 2015 to the current level of almost 240,000. According to WorkBC, approximately 62% of that is in the Lowermainland/Southwest region.
“It’s a boom encompassing both private and public projects, including infrastructure projects; we’re seeing the building of new roads, bridges, and tunnels; new utility lines; new underground piping systems. Construction graduates help keep it all going,” says Edward Chung, Program Director of the AutoCAD, Construction, and Engineering Division at Brighton College.
“Vancouver is also a port city with a high standard of living,” adds Perry Gross, an Educational Advisor at Brighton. “There is great demand for new buildings, both commercial and residential, and many investors willing to support such development. Architects and their assistants are highly sought after.”
Brighton College programs meet this need. Its Architectural Design & Building Technician diploma program qualifies students for management positions in the Architecture, Building Design, and Construction fields as soon as they graduate. Right now, the program has the second-best graduate employment rate of any at Brighton College.
Brighton’s Civil Infrastructure Design Technology program has the highest. Its success is easy to explain, says Chung: Graduates of this program earn accreditations that others don’t have.
“Graduates are fully accredited by the Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC),” says Chung. “They are further recognized by the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board (CTAB), making them eligible to work anywhere in Canada; plus Sydney, Australia, and Dublin, Ireland. These accreditations give potential employers confidence—and give our graduates the flexibility to choose their best path.”
