This program emphasizes infrastructure practices in civil engineering. Students will study civil infrastructure design, drafting, and construction methods. Topics covered include current building construction practices, civil infrastructure construction standards, and the use of computer-aided design and drafting software (including AutoCAD and Civil 3D) – ensuring that students acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to immediately begin work in the civil infrastructure sector as skilled professionals after graduation.

The civil infrastructure design technology program emphasizes practical hands-on infrastructure practices in design civil engineering. All aspects of design, drafting and construction methods are taught in lecture format augmented by on-site field visits. Instruction in the current building construction practices, civil infrastructure construction standards and current computer drafting technologies ensure students will have the knowledge, skills and competency to enter this labor force immediately upon graduation.

This diploma program is nationally accredited by the Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC). Graduates from this diploma program will be eligible for recognition by the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC) as a Certified Technician (CTech) and other provinces, as well as international certifying bodies.

This program is fully instructor-led, allowing students to gain knowledge quickly through architectural design concepts to building construction. The curriculum includes lectures facilitated by specialized industry experts. The program also includes work experience (practicum) at a various architecture, interior design or engineering firms. Brighton Civil Infrastructure Design diploma will be granted upon successfully completion of all courses.

P.S. Onsite field work in the City of Burnaby is required for Surveying course completion.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the diploma in Civil Engineering Design Technology, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Use AutoCAD effectively to create working drawings
  • Use AutoCAD as a tool to work on architectural and structural drawings
  • Apply local building code standards to architectural drawings
  • Layout buildings in civil land development subdivision plans
  • Perform geometric design for roadway systems
  • Apply TAC (Transportation Association of Canada) design standards to road infrastructure design
  • Understand civil infrastructure road pavement design and construction standards
  • Understand civil roadworks inspection techniques
  • Apply hydraulic principles and engineering formulas to design municipal sewer and water piping services
  • Use Civil 3D to create land development subdivision and infrastructure drawings
  • Use Civil 3D to create plan, profile and cross section drawings
  • Use conventional surveying equipment to perform surveying tasks
  • Create a working drawing portfolio for presentation during interviews
  • Apply the knowledge and skills to the practicum placement to gain practical employment experience (*Practicum only)
AUT010 | Computer and Mathematic Fundamentals

This course provides students with the fundamentals of computer operation, file management, and basic mathematics. Major topics include keyboarding skills, Microsoft Word document formatting, Excel spreadsheet creation, linear algebra, quadratic equations, trigonometry, and geometry.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: none.

AUT100 | AutoCAD Fundamentals

This course provides student with the fundamental skills of computer aided design and drafting using AutoCAD. Students learn the most up-to-date AutoCAD techniques that are being used in engineering and building-design professions. Utilizing high-end computer tools, students learn how to create drawings in 2-dimensional environments and basic 3-dimensional models.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

AUT140 | Technical Communications

Technical communication skills are required in service, business, and technical working environments. This course focuses on verbal, writing, and presentation skills within the scope of architecture and engineering. Students will learn how to produce technical report documents and present their project drawings effectively.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: none.

AUT150 | AutoCAD Advanced

This course provides students with instruction in advanced level AutoCAD commands and drawing management techniques. Students will learn project-orientated drafting and design skills, with an emphasis being placed on scaled 2-Dimensional project drawing in model and paper space layout settings. Students will also learn how to use advanced 3-Dimensional tools to create surface models and composite solid models.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.

CCT100 | Building Code

This course provides students with the knowledge to use the British Columbia Building Code as well as city zoning bylaws. Major topics include building zoning, residential wood framed building construction standards, design specifications, fire protection, basic structural standards, span table applications and other professional practices which may affect the design and construction of a building. Students will also use AutoCAD to create site plan, floor plans, sections and elevations.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.

AUT810 | Civil 3D

The course provides students with the skills to use Autodesk Civil 3D computer software for civil engineering, land development and infrastructure design. Students learn how to create civil plans, profiles, and cross sections as well as 3-dimensional corridor models. Major topics include survey data imports, creation of land surfaces, land parcels, roadway alignments, vertical curve profiles, underground piping layout, and infrastructure assemblies. Students also learn Civil 3D drafting procedures, dynamic model updating techniques and the computation of earth work as well as pavement material quantities.

Duration: 80 hours, 4 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100, AUT150, CCT100.

AUT410 | Building Piping Services

This course covers the principles of plumbing piping design with an emphasis on the application of piping components, material selection and pipe sizing which applies to water, storm and sanitary plumbing piping systems. Students will learn to calculate hydraulic loads for plumbing fixtures and create piping design drawings for residential and commercial buildings. Students will also learn to apply British Columbia Plumbing Code in the design of plumbing piping systems.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100, AUT150, CCT100.

CCT140 | Constructions Estimating 1

This course provides students with the knowledge necessary to estimate and control construction material quantities and cost for building structures and basic civil engineering infrastructures. Topics include residential, commercial and civil infrastructure estimating methods, quantity takeoff techniques, and cost calculation procedures of construction components. An overview of the contract terms and relationships between the contractual parties will also be discussed in this course.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100, CCT100.

CCT110 | Health and Safety in Construction

The course provides students the knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations in the workplace. The lecturer presents the role of key stakeholders involved in health and safety issues in construction. Main topics include the role of workers’ compensation board, accident prevention on the construction site, protection of the public, and health hazards in construction. WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Material Information System) is also covered.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
An extra online/self-paced segment of the course is required to be completed during the period of the Building Code course. This extra content is 4 hours in total.
Prerequisite: none.

CCT130 | Surveying

This course is designed to provide students with the basic knowledge of surveying as it applies to current engineering and construction practices. It focuses on surveying theory and practices required to execute specific survey tasks. It provides hands-on experience in the use of modern surveying equipment and techniques in generating the required survey information relevant to construction and engineering projects.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.

CCT150 | Civil Construction Inspection and Management

This course provides students with the knowledge of inspection techniques as well as project management skills in civil engineering. Main topics include pavement structure construction and basic design considerations, Gantt charts, CPM methods and scheduling techniques. In addition, overview of the contractual responsibilities, contract relationships, bonding, tendering and types of civil construction contracts are also discussed in this course.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: AUT100, CCT100.

CIV200 | Structural Design & Analysis

This course introduces the student to various exact and approximate methods of analysis for structural systems. Major topics include shear force, bending moment diagrams, stress and deflection calculation. Basic design principles of building structural systems such as beams, columns, footings, floors, and bracing members will also be introduced in this course. Students will use AutoCAD to create structural drawings.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: AUT100, AUT150, CCT100.

CIV250 | Road Design

This course provides students the knowledge in designing and analyzing urban and rural roadway systems according to local roadway and transportation standards. Roadway classifications, standard street cross section requirements, vertical and horizontal geometric design parameters, traffic conditions, drainage facilities and pavement structure design criteria will be discussed. Students learn to use computer aided-design software to plan, layout and design various roadway systems as well as calculating mass earthwork cut and fill quantities.

Duration: 75 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100, AUT150, CCT100.

CIV300 | Urban Municipal Service Design

This course provides students the knowledge in municipal piping design, layout and analysis. Students learn to prepare detailed designs of storm, sanitary sewer systems and water distribution piping systems. Major topics include fluid hydraulic principles, pressure piping design considerations, gravity piping analysis, storm water flow computation, wastewater flow rate, and preparation of servicing design plans. Local municipal piping infrastructure management techniques are also discussed in this course.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100, AUT150, CCT100.

AUT650 | Portfolio Development

This course helps students to prepare a working portfolio, which will assist them in presenting themselves during interviews or seminars. Students will produce a portfolio in the areas of engineering and architectural 2D drawings and 3D models. Students also will learn interview skills and how to prepare their resume and cover letter.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: AUT100, AUT150, CCT100.

WEP150 | Practicum

The student will have the opportunity to integrate theory and skills learnt during the program with practical situation from the real world of business. The purpose is to obtain relevant field experience prior to graduation and identify strengths prior to embarking on a new, exciting career.

Duration: 150 hours, 4 weeks.

Admission Requirements

  • High school diploma or mature student status*
  • Legal eligibility to study in Canada
  • Pass College's mathematic entrance examination
  • Evidence of prior secondary or post-secondary education with English as the language of instruction, or provide proof of language proficiency from any of the following standardized tests: CAEL 40, CLB PT (Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, Writing 5), CELPIP (Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, Writing 5), IELTS Academic 5.5, TOEFL IBT 46, iTEP Academic 3.5, LANGUAGECERT Academic B2 level, or Duolingo English Test 95. Refer to Language Proficiency Policy for details.

*Mature Student is defined as an individual who is 19 years of age or older at the start of the program.
