This program equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to enter the construction industry as skilled professionals with training in site operations, coordination, and supervision. Students will study construction theories, practices, and computer-aided design techniques. Major topics include the design concepts of buildings, the application of building code and standards, construction drawing methods, construction surveying, basic project management skills, scheduling techniques, health and safety regulations, and construction estimating.

The Construction Operations and Supervision Diploma program provides students with the knowledge and skills to work in the construction industry and advance their careers as site coordinators, supervisors, and superintendents. Students will learn construction theories, practical construction knowledge and computer application techniques. Major topics include the design concepts of buildings, building code and standards, construction drawing methods, basic project management skills, surveying, scheduling techniques, health and safety regulations, and construction estimating.
Upon successful completion of the program, students are primarily suitable for employment in local construction firms, engineering firms, consultant and governmental agencies, and with contractors or subcontractors. Employment opportunities and further studies may be pursued in the fields of engineering, building science, architecture, and computer-aided design.
P.S. Onsite field work in the City of Burnaby is required for Surveying course completion.

This course provides students with the fundamentals of computer operation, file management, and basic mathematics. Major topics include keyboarding skills, Microsoft Word document formatting, Excel spreadsheet creation, linear algebra, quadratic equations, trigonometry, and geometry.

This course provides student with the fundamental skills of computer aided design and drafting using AutoCAD. Students learn the most up-to-date AutoCAD techniques that are being used in engineering and building-design professions. Utilizing high-end computer tools, students learn how to create drawings in 2-dimensional environments and basic 3-dimensional models.
Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.
This course provides students with instruction in advanced level AutoCAD commands and drawing management techniques. Students will learn project-orientated drafting and design skills, with an emphasis being placed on scaled 2-Dimensional project drawing in model and paper space layout settings. Students will also learn how to use advanced 3-Dimensional tools to create surface models and composite solid models.
Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.
This course provides students with the knowledge to use the British Columbia Building Code as well as city zoning bylaws. Major topics include building zoning, residential wood framed building construction standards, design specifications, fire protection, basic structural standards, span table applications and other professional practices which may affect the design and construction of a building. Students will also use AutoCAD to create site plan, floor plans, sections and elevations.
Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.
Technical communication skills are required in service, business, and technical working environments. This course focuses on verbal, writing, and presentation skills within the scope of architecture and engineering. Students will learn how to produce technical report documents and present their project drawings effectively.
Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.

This course explains the role of key stakeholders involved in health and safety issues in construction. Sessions will include: the role of the workers’ compensation board, accident prevention on the construction site, the protection of the public, health hazards, and the cost of accidents in construction.

This course provides students with the knowledge necessary to estimate and control construction material quantities and cost for building structures and basic civil engineering infrastructures. Topics include residential, commercial and civil infrastructure estimating methods, quantity takeoff techniques, and cost calculation procedures of construction components. An overview of the contract terms and relationships between the contractual parties will also be discussed in this course.
Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100, CCT100.
This course provides students with the knowledge to estimate and control construction activities for major wood, steel, and reinforced concrete building structures. Topics include residential, commercial, and industrial building quantity estimating methods, computerized takeoff techniques, and the calculation of construction costs. An overview of contractual obligations, contract specifications, and tender document interpretation will also be covered.
Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100, CCT100.
This course prepares students to perform the processes and procedures of a construction manager and site management professional. Major topics include project management and the project team; the use of construction documents on jobsite; submittals, samples and shop drawings; documentation and record keeping; jobsite layout and control; meetings, negotiations, and disputes; labor relations and safety management; subcontracting and the purchasing contract structure; project quality management; time and cost control; computerized project administration; scheduling; changes and claims; progress payments, and project closeout.
Duration: 40 hours, 4 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.
This course introduces the fundamental concepts of surveying, as well as practical, hands-on knowledge of the surveying techniques applied in the construction industry. Major topics include surveying terminology, instrumentation, computations for determining horizontal positions, elevations, and basic layout techniques of buildings and infrastructures. Students will be trained to use conventional surveying equipment such as a differential level for determining elevation, and electronic total stations for determining geometric positions. Basic concepts of GIS will also be discussed in this course.

Prerequisite: AUT100.
This course provides students with an overview of structural engineering and the various types of building construction techniques. Major topics include structural load types, design standards, structural components, statics, construction materials, and construction methods. Various types of structural systems made by wood, steel and concrete material will also be discussed.
Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100, AUT150.
This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to plan a construction project, recognize cost controls, schedule the use of project resources, and understand the organization of the construction processes. Students will also learn to maintain construction change orders, record project data, and perform cost control functions. Various project task scheduling methods will be used throughout the course, and students will be taught to use Microsoft Project software to develop and manage a construction project.
Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: AUT100.
This course provides students with a general overview of Canadian contract and construction law. Major topics include the interpretation of contract terms and specifications and the application of construction law to the business of construction. The course content also relates these legal concepts to practical issues in the construction process. Students will become familiar with key construction law concepts through intensive studies of real-life construction law cases.
Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.

This course focuses on team dynamics, leadership, and building the skills required to achieve goals while working in a diverse group. Students will complete a team project and in the process practice successful communication strategies, goal definition, schedule coordination, peer feedback, and conflict management. Additional course topics include learning styles, diversity, appreciating differences, and ethical behavior in teams.
Prerequisite: None
This course helps students prepare a working portfolio, which will assist them in presenting themselves during interviews or seminars. Students will produce a portfolio in the areas of computer aided design and engineering and architectural 2D and 3D model drawings. Students also will learn interview skills and how to prepare their resume and cover letter.
Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: AUT100, AUT150, CCT100.
During their practicum, students will have the opportunity to apply the theory and skills they learned during their program to practical situations at a real business. The purpose of the practicum is for students to obtain relevant field experience prior to graduation, and identify their strengths and areas of growth prior to embarking on a new, exciting career.
Duration: 150 hours, 4 weeks.
