This Sunday, July 1st, will mark Canada’s 145 year anniversary since the 1867 Constitution Act that united the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada. Across the country, schools, banks and many other businesses will be closed to join in on numerous events demonstrating Canadian pride in celebrating the country and its people.
On Sunday, the city of Vancouver will be lit up in red and white by crowds dressed in their beloved country’s colours out to attend such events all across the city from Granville Island to Surrey! If you are still unsure of how you’d like to celebrate, check out these local events and make your pick:
Canada Place
Canada Place has been the Canada Day celebration venue of choice for the past 25 years. Starting at 10:00 AM, Canada Place will host a waterfront party with music performers on three stages, along with numerous other activities throughout the day. The waterfront party runs until 6:00 PM, tying nicely into the Canada Day parade. Canada Place is also a popular location of choice for viewing the Burrard Inlet Fireworks show.
Granville Island
For Granville Island fans or families with younger children, the island is a great spot for plenty more Canada Day festivities (most of which are free to attend!) activities include wishing Canada a happy birthday for a big slice of cake, featured music from the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and an $8/person pancake breakfast.
Block party at the Waldorf hotel
New this year is a free block party in East Vancouver hosted by the Waldorf Hotel, Yelp, and the Street Food Vancouver Society. The block party will feature a day filled with delicious food and live music from Vancouver’s top food carts, music performers, and DJs. The block party will also feature a carnival and beer garden.
The Burnaby Village Museum
The Burnaby Village Museum will be hosting the official Canada Day celebrations for the City of Burnaby. Admission is free and festivities include a parade, kids activities, $2.30 Carousel rides and plenty of entertaining displays and demonstrations.
