Making Your New Year’s Resolutions for 2013

Every year we think up various plans to start over fresh in the New Year. We focus on things like losing weight, spending less money, being better students, and taking up new hobbies. We try so hard to stick to resolutions but it seems that for most, by the time February comes around, we have long since forgotten about these resolutions to be better people.

Part of the problem stems from the fact that we often choose resolutions that are too general and therefore easy to lose track of or we choose resolutions that are completely unrealistic.

You’ve probably heard this before, but goal setting is important. Resolutions are the same way; if you set goals within the scope of your resolution, there is a much better chance that you will stick with it and continue to live up to your own expectations.

For example, if your New Year’s resolution was to go back to school you should consider setting up a checklist of how you plan to accomplish this month by month, or even week by week. One small goal a week, like looking into different schools or considering what programs you might be interested in, will help your resolution in the long run.

If goal setting isn’t for you, stick with more mundane, simple resolutions:

  • Be happy
  • Don’t speed
  • Eat less fast food
  • Watch the entire James Bond series…
  • Choose words to live by: confidence, happiness, healthy living

The list is endless. The simpler the concept, the easier it will be for you to follow through. Realistically, setting yourself up with an attainable New Year’s resolution that you know you can accomplish will help you to reflect positively on 2013 when the time comes.

With that, we’d like to wish you a Happy New Year from all of us here at Brighton College!
