This program provides students with a comprehensive foundation of knowledge in business management, and equips them with the analytical skills they need to effectively function in various technical and operational capacities. Graduates will be prepared to seek gainful employment as business professionals, or start their own business.

This program is instructor-driven, allowing students to navigate quickly through a solid foundation of both theory and practical application. The curriculum includes learner-centered, experiential lectures and workshops facilitated by experienced instructors. The program includes a co-op that is completed at one of various small and mid-sized businesses throughout the lower mainland. A Brighton College Business Administration Management Diploma will be granted upon successful program completion.

Transfer Pathway with Yorkville University

Yorkville UniversityBrighton College has an articulation agreement with Yorkville University. Through this partnership, graduates of the Business Administration Management Diploma program can now transfer 36 credits to Yorkville University's Bachelor of Business Administration.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program the successful student will have the ability to:

  • Demonstrate strong communication skills both in written and oral presentation.
  • Use Word to create a professional document.
  • Use Excel to create spreadsheets and use the calculation functions.
  • Develop comprehensive understanding of business operation such as marketing, human resource management, accounting, finance, economics, law, and other topics.
  • Use Critical Thinking to make daily business decisions and problem solving.
  • Ensure socially responsible and ethical business practice.
  • Develop effective job searching strategies and gain practical employment experience.
BAF100 | Business Mathematics and Technology

This course will help student review basic mathematics and introduce to student some business mathematical concepts. The topics will include algebra, time value of money, future value, present value, annuity, investment evaluation, and other basic financial concepts. Some common business software such as Microsoft Outlook will also be introduced in this course.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

BUS100 | Business Communications

Students will practice business writing skills, applying the mechanics of style, developing proofreading and editing skills and using words effectively. They will apply verbal and non-verbal styles to a variety of business communications. The students will also practice career and interpersonal skills necessary for success in the workplace, such as conflict resolution and business etiquette. They will work in teams to examine administrative, ergonomic and efficiency functions of a business office. Students will also learn about using PowerPoint to deliver demonstrations, training, and presentations in a professional manner.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

COM200 | Microsoft Word

This course explores the fundamental use of Microsoft Office’s word processing software: Microsoft Word. Students will learn how to use Word to create, save, edit, format, and manipulate documents in a professional manner.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: none.

COM210 | Microsoft Excel

This course explores the fundamental use of Microsoft Office’s spreadsheet creation software: Microsoft Excel. Students will learn how to use Excel to create spreadsheets, perform calculations, generate charts from data tables, and print results.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

BAF140 | Introduction to Accounting

This course introduces the students to the construction and interpretation of financial systems, records, reports and statements, including how vital accurate and complete financial data is for a business to ensure its ongoing success. This course is the first in a series of courses to build a solid base in accounting from both a practical and a theoretical perspective.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

BAF150 | Financial Accounting

This course is a continuation of the work stated in Introduction to Accounting. This course provides students’ introductory knowledge about the construction and interpretation of financial systems, records, reports, and statements. It also shows how vital accurate and complete financial data is for a business to ensure its ongoing success.

Duration: 40 hours, 2 weeks.
Prerequisite: BAF140.

BAF160 | Organizational Behaviors

Improving organizational effectiveness by studying behavior in organizations is the focus of this course. Students develop the ability to evaluate their own behavior and that of others by critically examining performance and activities at the individual level, the group level, and the organizational level.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

BAF170 | Marketing - A Global Managerial Approach

This course is designed to provide students with an overview of marketing concepts and how they can be applied to any type of organization or service. This course examines the controllable and uncontrollable elements of marketing, strategic planning, market characteristics, marketing research techniques, market segmentation and target market selection.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

BAF180 | Business Law

This course introduces students to the Canadian legal system, dispute resolution, and torts. Topics of study include product liability, contracts, sale of goods, agency, employment, business structures, personal and intellectual property, e-commerce, and international trade.

BAF210 | Human Resource Management

This course introduces the role of human resource management and its contribution to the effectiveness of organizations and their employees. In today’s rapidly changing business world, organizations are realizing that their greatest asset is their employees, and that the effective management of people is a key factor in their overall success. This course provides an overview of essential human resource management concepts and techniques, specifically related to the main areas of human resource management activity. Whether you become a business owner, supervisor, manager, or human resources professional, this course will provide you with helpful information and insights to help you deal with issues relating to people in organizations.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.

BAF220 | Introduction to Logical & Critical Thinking

This course is an exploration of problem-solving tools and strategies that can be applied to practical, everyday dilemmas. Students will develop their analytical skills and improve their ability to confront confusion, ambiguity, and fallacies in their daily life.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

BAF230 | Economics for Business

This course introduces students to the principles of micro and macro-economic theory. Topics of study include, market fundamentals, supply and demand, consumer and producer behavior, monopoly and competition, and the determination of national economic activity. The course prepares students to weigh political and economic issues as they relate to business ventures.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

BAF240 | Business Finance

This course introduces the basic principles of financial valuation, including the time-value of money and the risk/return trade-off; to develop tools for the quantitative analysis of corporate and/or individual financing and saving decisions, as well as of capital budgeting decisions.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: BAF140.

BAF252 | Professional Selling Skills

This course offers students an opportunity to learn and practice a combination of selling fundamentals and selling strategies needed to succeed in today’s business environment. The focus of the lecture/workshop is all the skills required for developing and implementing relationships, product, customer, and presentation strategies.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

BAF260 | Leadership and Ethics*

This course provides an overview of theories and concepts in business ethics and leadership. This course will help students to understand ethical reasoning in the business context and introduce them to the concept of corporate social responsibility. The course will also cover theories for effective leadership and practical advice for business leaders. Students will develop a personal definition of leadership and define personal leadership values, understand cultural influences on leadership and explore power, influence, engagement, and motivation.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.

BAF270 | Strategic Management

Strategic management in organizations is vital to the long-term effectiveness of any organization. This course introduces students to a variety of strategic processes including improving the quality of decision-making in a time-sensitive global environment. Students examine traditional principles of strategic management enhanced by contemporary new analytical concepts.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.

BAM310 | Online Marketing & Social Media

The use of social media in today’s business environment is a growing phenomenon. A blend of theory and practice will ensure a thorough understanding of this important trend. Students will learn the principles of on-line marketing and its importance in the 21st century business environment. Emphasis will be placed on practical uses of social media and how the tools learnt in this course can result in meaningful marketing strategies.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.

BAA320 | Business and Quantitative Methods

This course introduces the methods and applications of statistics in business; data analysis, descriptive regression, data generations; sampling distributions; hypothesis testing; confidence intervals; inference in regression; linear programming and spreadsheet modeling.

Duration: 60 hours, 3 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

BAM330 | Marketing Research

Students will learn methods and techniques of research that can be used to gain valuable information for better business decision making. The focus of this course is on customer relations and marketing, the knowledge gained in this course can be used in many aspects of business.

BAB400 | Project Management

This course introduces the fundamentals of project management. A working knowledge of project management tools and how to apply them is essential in today’s business environment. This course shows a defined set of project management procedures used to provide a consistent and effective management methodology. Students are required to undertake and earn a passing mark for their major project in this course. All other courses in this program must be successfully completed prior to taking this course.

Duration: 100 hours, 5 weeks.

BUS500 | Employment Readiness/Job Search

This course helps students prepare the required job search skills and knowledge they need to become employed. Students will learn the best-known job search techniques to find viable opportunities, strategies to differentiate themselves from the competition and how they will add value to prospective employers in today’s competitive global economy.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: none.

WEP960 | Co-op

A co-operative (co-op) work placement provides students with the opportunity to implement their newly acquired knowledge and skills from their academic program into relevant work experience. During the co-op, students will be considered employees who are actively engaged in productive work. The experience provides students with coaching, work-site monitoring, and employer evaluations. Students will also gain deeper insight into the industry, explore their different career opportunities, and observe professionals in practical situations. They will acquire situation-specific skills and identify areas that may need to be developed further. To ensure a high-quality co-op experience, the institution will monitor both the student and the employer throughout the co-op. At the conclusion of the co-op, students and employers jointly complete a written evaluation of the student’s performance to direct the future career development of the student.

Duration: 960 hours, 24 weeks.

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) or mature student status;
  • English language proficiency requirements:
    • Domestic students: Grade 10 English or pass college admissions test;
    • Grade 10 Math, or pass college mathematics assessment;
    • International students: IELTS 6.0 proof (or equivalent), or pass college English assessment.
