This certificate in hospitality provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the many entities that make up the Hospitality Industry, as well as an overview of today’s hot issues including but not limited to ethical challenges and management concerns. The course features information on green hotels and restaurants, hotel technology, application of management techniques as well as how internet, e-mail and social media have changed hospitality marketing. Students will also learn the required job search skills they need to become employed in the hospitality and service industry.

Students will learn the best-known job search techniques to find viable opportunities, strategies to differentiate themselves from the competition and how they will add value to prospective employers in today’s competitive global economy. The program also includes 3 certifications to prepare students for positions in the hospitality industry: Serving it Right, FoodSafe Level 1, and Guest Service Gold: Golden Opportunities.

Students will receive the following certifications upon successful completion of program/required exams:

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program the successful student will have the ability to:

  • Recognize the many entities that make up the Hospitality Industry and acquire an overview of issues including challenges and management concerns.
  • Assess the management priorities of the operation of hotels, restaurants, and other hospitality organizations.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills both in written and oral presentation.
  • Demonstrate how to provide a level of guest service that leaves a lasting impression on each guest and builds customer relationships that can last a lifetime.
  • Apply known job search techniques to find viable opportunities, strategies to differentiate themselves from the competition.
  • Apply knowledge, skills and abilities gained through the course to accelerate their workplace advancement within the hospitality industry.
  • Understand and practice Safe food handling practices.
  • Understand the laws and responsibilities related to the responsible service of alcoholic beverages.
  • Explain the difference between commercial and non-commercial food service operations and describe the purpose and structure of organization charts and the various organizational structures of food and beverage operations.
  • Explain marketing in terms of providing guest-pleasing service, and discuss the elements and importance of feasibility studies, marketing research, and marketing plans.
  • Identify technological innovations that help food and beverage operations address sustainability concerns.
HSF103 | The Hospitality Industry: An Overview

This course provides students a comprehensive introduction to the many entities that make up the Hospitality Industry, as well as an overview of today’s hot issues including but not limited to ethnical challenges and management concerns. The course features information on green hotels and restaurants, hotel technology, application of management techniques as well as how internet, e-mail and social media have changed the hospitality marketing. Students will attend several field trips during class time to gain a real-world impression the hospitality industry.

Duration: 100 hours, 5 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

HSF349 | Service in Food and Beverage Operations

This course trains students how food service professionals create and deliver guest-driven service, enhance value, build guest loyalty, and promote repeat business. Students will learn how every aspect of a food service operation contributes to the guest experience and will explore unique features of a variety of food and beverage operations. Students will attend several field trips to food and beverage establishments during class time to gain a real-world impression of the hospitality industry.

Duration: 80 hours, 4 weeks.
Prerequisite: none.

HSF091 | Guest Service Gold: Golden Opportunities

This course focuses on customer service in the hospitality environment. Students will learn about 'golden opportunities' - moments or exchanges that can leave a guest feeling delighted or disappointed. Using a combination of vital elements, Guest Service Gold®: Golden Opportunities demonstrates how to provide a level of guest service that leaves a lasting impression on each guest and builds customer relationships that can last a lifetime.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: none.

HSP100 | Food Safe and Serving It Right Certification

Food Safe Level 1 is for food service establishment operators and front-line food service workers such as cooks, servers, bussers, dishwashers, and deli workers. Topics include foodborne illness, receiving and storing food, preparing food, serving food, cleaning and sanitizing.
Serving It Right is British Columbia's mandatory self-study course that educates licensees, managers and servers about their legal responsibilities when serving alcohol and provides effective techniques to prevent problems related to over-service.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: none.

BUS500 | Employment Readiness/Job Search

This course helps students prepare the required job search skills and knowledge they need to become employed. Students will learn the best known job search techniques to find viable opportunities, strategies to differentiate themselves from the competition and how they will add value to prospective employers in today’s competitive global economy.

Duration: 20 hours, 1 week.
Prerequisite: none.

Admission Requirements

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) or mature student status;
  • English language proficiency requirements:
    • Domestic students: Grade 10 English or pass college admissions test;
    • International students: IELTS 6.0 proof (or equivalent), or pass college English assessment.

*Under no circumstances can these Admission Requirements be waived by the student or the institution.
